Malaysia Broadband Service Comparison – DiGi, Maxis Broadband & Celcom Broadband [Extreme Round: July 2011]

We meet again in MBSC (Malaysia’s Broadband Service Comparison). After about a year, lot of things happened and some goes awful and some goes really handy and better. The last review I did the reviews on these BSP (Broadband Service Provider) is on 27 July 2010 and readers keep mailing me , “When you gonna update the score?”.

As debate is going on, TM Streamyx is excluded from this review as most readers doesnt agree to include that giant on portable broadband. So now the MBSC will be shortlisting the most voted BSP for the review.

Sorry! I’m just too busy with all development, research and my studies. Well, we have up and downs in life. Okay, get ready to be amazed. We’ll get serious on them!

Number One : Celcom Broadband

After a year of the previous review, I’m shocked and amazed with Celcom. The services are getting better, coverage is wider and ahh.. its a breeze to use celcom now! A lot improvement has being done by the company and one thing for sure. It works! Previously, if you experience frequent DC (Disconnection of Internet Connection) – Now it is over. I have tested and experienced these problem in the past and now when I work on 24-48 hours; no DC at all (I’m in Kota Kinabalu which located quite bit far from the City Center). The coverage is excellent! Now I can surf the internet under my bed, or while playing hide and seek with my niece in my closet. Okay, thats a joke. But believe me, the coverage is excellent.

Every broadband have its pro and cons- so did Celcom. Although I can get all excellent features of Internet but theres a pay back : The payment cost. As I subscribed to National Broadband Initiative (NBI), it only requires me to pay RM100 to get the service and a broadband stick. As for the monthly basis for two years, I’ll be paying RM48. However, on the first month of the subscribtion, I have being charged for RM38.70 for unknown service charge – I’m really get pissed off as the promoter has said that there is no additional fees for anything and yet I have to pay for this stamp duty charge.

To make it simplified, here are the winning and comparison main points why they got the number one in MBSC July 2011:

CELCOM BROADBAND VERDICT

GOOD POINTS

  1. Consistency and Connection Speed
  2. No Contract Anymore
  3. Free Modem
  4. Friendly Customer Service
  5. Wide Coverage

BAD POINTS

Celcom broadband is now better and compatitive however, there’s something for them to improve.  Here are the factors that they might need to improve in order to maintain the number one rating in this comparison:

  1. Out of Quota, you out! – Once the quota had runs out, you will experience the “internet speed nightmare”. Dont ask why if you cant play some Flash games such Farmville, Cityville or Empires and Allies in Facebook nor other games
  2. Pricy Addons Service - You got to be serious when you are out of quota and you can smile by simply purchase a whole lot PRICY cost of RM15 for 1GB of new caps or 5GB for RM50.

Number Two: Maxis Broadband

Yay! If you are a fan of maxis, please give yourself a pat on the back.. Although previously being the underdog in broadband history, this BSP comes with a new fresh and amazing deal on board. The speed and the coverage are incredible, plus more value for your money. As might many concern, the company provides almost the same price of its services to Celcom Broadband. If you seek for an alternative of Celcom, Maxis is the one. As for the coverage, it covers a huge and wide areas in peninsular and as well as in Sabah and Sarawak. Unfortunately, the internet connection is not yet stable and experience disconnection upon unknown reason.

MAXIS BROADBAND VERDICT

GOOD POINTS

  1. Free Modem
  2. Friendly Customer Service
  3. Wide Coverage

BAD POINTS

Maxi broadband is now better and compatitive however, there’s something for them to improve.  Here are the factors that they might need to improve in order to achieve or get the number one rating as what Celcom has won in this comparison:

  1. Internet Connection Consistency - Main coverage on populated areas and residental are needed if you wish to enter the competition. Although you achieve that, consistency of speed is the number one you had to consider. Unknown disconnection of Internet is unacceptable.

Number Three: DiGi Broadband

If you are a fan of DiGi, you might want to reconsider any available option for your internet.. Get some parachutes and jump out from this service! I have bailed out myself from the worst Internet experience I ever met. As previously they got the intention of being the best BSP, now it really a pain in your tooth! As the price is cheap, the service is utterly disaster. As from the great deal, comes the bad coverage and terrible usage caps. What should I say to confirm this? Right now I still in debt to DiGi for almost RM2++ for things that I didnt use. They form a contract to their early customer previously and those being a traitor to them.. You will get the monthly bills although you didnt use this terrible broadband. Okay, if you are DiGi supporters – Dont get mad at me. All my friends and my sister is switching off away from DiGi. So, its your turn to decide (If you are smart enough to use the terrible thing).

DiGi BROADBAND VERDICT

GOOD POINTS

  1. No Contract Anymore for New User
  2. Free Modem
  3. Friendly Customer Service

BAD POINTS

DiGi broadband is now getting worst than ever and It doesnt make us happy anymore.  Here are the factors that they might need to improve in order to achieve or get the number one rating as what Celcom has won in this comparison:

  1. Internet Connection Consistency - Main coverage on populated areas and residental are needed if you wish to enter the competition. DiGi missed this opportunity and chosen to be the worst after a year of the previous review.
  2. Price and Values - Now people are racing to pay less at great values. Its really uncompetitive to serve a price that unreasonably high but at low quality. DiGi broadband is such a broadband sucker now.
  3. Low Cost, Low Quality – Its really a shame on DiGi. They offer a cheap service at a low quality.

MALAYSIA’S OVERALL BROADBAND VERDICT

Great sharing. FYI, i had a bad experience with umobile too. Their price is fairly ok but the coverage, stability, customer service very bad. A lot of places in GPRS only. Sometimes internet speed is ok, but sometimes is bad on the same spot even with good signal, got DC too! Very hard to predict. Never receive statement but asking for payment! I would definitely say “NO” to Umobile, and I would agree that maxis simply better base on my experience.
